Shulman

Igor Andrianov is a figurative artist based in Prague, Czech Republic.

Under the artist name of Shulman, he creates modern oil paintings in different genres such as portrait and nude. Using a painterly style, he produces contemporary life scenes, everyday scenarios. His works feature a bold and colorful background that allows for the viewer’s focus to remain on the figure depicted—the focal point of the scene.

Born in 1959 in Tver, Russia—formerly known as Kalinin, one of Russia’s oldest towns—Igor Andrianov was artistic since a young age. As he got older, he decided to pursue a career in the arts. He attended the Venezianov Art college in Tver, where he studied interior design. In 1999, he moved to Prague and began practicing under the creative persona, Shulman. Throughout the years, he remained an independent artist, never working for anyone but himself. Aside from painting, he has experience working as a dock hand, seaman, builder, truck driver, and businessman.

Shulman’s work takes inspiration from a wide range of art movements. He merges different fragments from them to create something entirely new and unique to him and his painting practice. Furthermore, his artworks take a cue from the artistic movement of Realism. He uses a highly realistic style that plays with the very same concept of realism. Additionally, his images contain distinct innovation and creativity.

Through his art, Shulman expresses the passion of everyday life. He sees the city of Prague as one of the most inspirational cities and places in Europe for an artist. Furthermore, his own life experiences as Igor Andrianov heavily influence him. Additionally, his artistic endeavors find inspiration from his wife, who is a constant influence in his life.

For Igor Andrianov his creativity is a very important aspect of his work as Shulman. He uses his creativity even in his dreams and often finds himself drawing out new pictures and finding new realities while he sleeps. Furthermore, his painting has a very specific creative process. For each new painting, he devoutly follows his method and modifies it accordingly. A typical day in the studio for him consists of him working from eleven in the morning until eight at night.

Shulman’s works exhibited in a variety of solo and group exhibitions both in a regional and international level in countries such as Russia, the Czech Republic, Sweden, France, and Holland. Most notably, in 2016 he participated in the Edinburgh Art Fair, recognized as the United Kingdom’s most prestigious and leading art fair outside of London. Furthermore, his works are in museums, galleries, and private collections in the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, the United States, Canada, Italy, France, Belgium, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Australia, Austria, China, Japan, Bahrain, Mexico, New Zealand, Brazil, and Costa Rica.

As Shulman, Igor Andrianov strives to create paintings he self-describes as positive, beautiful, and satisfactory.
